24 hours in Vigo

Located at the coast of the Atlantic ocean, Vigo is an original fishers village. The old fishing industry is still visible in the historic center, although in contrast to this the modern fish industry dominates the coast side. Vigo is worth a visit not only because its breathtaking Landscape but the culinary delicacies based on fish and seafood in order to its economical main pillar.
So let the 24 hours in Vigo begin...

10 am – harbor of Vigo

We start the day by visiting the place Vigo is probably the most famous for. The harbor of Vigo. Here in the morning, it is already pretty busy. You can watch the fisher already coming back from their trip and everywhere are cranes transporting big boxes. The port of Vigo is the world´s largest and transports tons of fish all over Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and even parts of China.

11 am- Illas Ciés

So now that we are already at the sea side of Vigo we can make a little detour to the Illas Ciés, also called the islands of gods. With less than a hour ride by ferry from the land we arrive in paradise. With a view to the mountains of Galicia and the Ría de Vigo, the islands are supposed to have more beautiful beaches than Colombia or Brasil.
In general this place offers attractions for everyone. You can relax on the beach and listen to many species of birds during the slow waves meet the rough sand or go hiking to the lighthouse for having an amazing overview on the top of the Monte Faro. Especially precious is this place when the sun goes down, so obviously you could spend the whole day there but we still got a lot to visit…

o    Three islands
o    4.4635 km^2
o    7.1 km long
 o    Highest point : 197
 o    National parc since 1980

12.30 am – Concatedral de San María

Back on the main land we should go and get some more knowledge about Vigo. The first stop would be the Concatedral de San María pretty close to the harbor. A piece of history you do not have to pay for. It has a pretty temple and the architecture is precious with its pompous columns. The first church has been built on the same ground in the 13th century. Over the years the church has been rebuilt and more walls were built around the original building.

14.00 pm- Mercado da pedra

It is time for lunch. The best place to discover all facets of the galician food would be the Mercado da pedra. Here is a rich offer of fresh oysters and octopus. Afterwards it is highly recommended trying out all of small bars and cafés around this place.  So there is nothing in the way for your unique experience.

16.00 pm- Monte O Castro

It pays off taking some minutes to get from the marked to the Monte. Here you have a 360 ° overview of Vigo and the water. From historical monuments to nature there is everything your heart desires. In the 3rd and 1st century before Christ this hill in the center of Vigo was the home of the first celtic settler. Nowadays it is one of the most famous places in Vigo.

18.00 pm- El mejor banco del mundo

Galiza it´s different, the slogan which is written on the mejor banco del mundo says everything. Galicia is differently beautiful. The proof is this observation deck outside of Vigo, Redondela to be exact.  At sunset you can end the day at this place away from the city with a view over the Puente de Rande, which reminds a little of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Vigo has so many beautiful aspects about it. From industry over history to nature, in Vigo you will learn something about everything. But for me personally it was not the country that made me fall in love with Vigo. No, it was the people. They are very nice and genuine and always help you out whenever you need them. Everything together a trip to Vigo is with no doubts unique and unforgettable.
